Best Rooftop Cocktails in DTLA
November 30, 2018
If you’re accustomed to staying in a fine penthouse for rent in LA, chances are you like the high life, and the perks associated with it — like downing fabulously crafted cocktails from some of the city’s best rooftop bars:
“When the golden hour hits on summer evenings, a ritual unfolds in cities across America: cubicle dwellers rush for the exits; lines form waiting for elevators to open; and social media is flooded with images of backlit skyscrapers and bright cocktails. It’s rooftop time.”
And who wouldn’t love a bit of time out, surveying the city from on high with drink in hand? According to Lodging Magazine, people of all stripes flock to the experience to fulfill a need for camaraderie and enjoying the outdoors:
“Rooftop bars have boomed in popularity over the last several years. These sky-high spaces attract customers in urban areas where outdoor space is limited as well as those who seek out unique and shareable experiences.”
As luck would have it, DTLA has a number of fine establishments that can offer exactly that, and we’re going to be going over a few choice picks to aid your search of the best rooftop cocktails you can find in the city.
Upstairs at Ace Hotel
Hotels are well-known for their rooftop offerings, and the Ace Hotel is not one to disappoint in that regard. Though a haunt that is sometimes dominated by out-of-towners and the hipster element in the city, it has its fair share of authentic charm. There’s live music, courtesy of the rotating list of DJs, to keep the party atmosphere a pumping, the venue plays host to a number of art shows, pop-ups, and events, and if you’re feeling famished, the finely-tuned menu surely has something to suit your tastes. To top it all off, you can get quite the cocktail here, like the “Saturn Return” and aptly named “Leviosa.”
NoMad Rooftop Bar
NoMad, if you weren’t already aware, is another hotel spot with a superb amount of space to stretch out in:
“With 5,178 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, evenings on The Rooftop can accommodate seated dinners or large-scale cocktail receptions with a wide variety of set-up options.”
It’s not just the spacious setup that draws visitors here, however, as the grand views of LA Skyline and streets below are a sight to behold. When it comes to atmosphere, NoMad has it in spades — calm, cool, and collected for all the laid back types. They know how to mix a mean cocktail too. If you’re heading out to drink, might as well go to a bar where they know their stuff!
Perch, on South Hill Street, is one of those spots that’s frequently mentioned on “best of” lists, and with good reason. It’s an old standby in the rooftop scene. Not too new, not over-the-top in terms of energy or excitement, but always consistent. You’ll have a steady, reliable level of fun here, supplemented by the low key vibe and amazing overlook of Pershing Square. The French fare on the menu will fill you up and satisfy your tastebuds, and the cocktails have that dose of old-school charm, with names on the list like “Lolita,” “Hemingway on the Beach,” and “Midnight in Paris.”
The Rooftop Bar at the Standard
If you want a packed, party-hardy vibe, then the rooftop bar at The Standard is going to be your destination of choice. It’s almost as if it was designed for living it up:
“The Rooftop at The Standard, Downtown LA offers stunning, panoramic views of Downtown Los Angeles and the mountains beyond, a heated swimming pool, red AstroTurf deck, dance floor, nightly DJs, bar, outdoor fireplace, waterbed pods, and sculptured topiary.“
The pool is generally ground zero for the festivities, but don’t count out the ping pong tables if you’re looking for excitement, and like any good rooftop bar, you can indeed score yourself a worthy cocktail here, packed with enough alcohol to keep the party train rolling down the tracks.
You want to have a blast? Then you’ll want to go to Elevate Lounge, 21 stories above the hustle and bustle of the LA streets. The lovely expanse of the southern and western portions of DTLA are clearly visible from this space, and the atmosphere is one of the sleekest and stylish in the city. Indoor and outdoor become one, as they say in their promotional material, as you’ll simultaneously feel like your in the penthouse and out in the open air. Combined with the subtle hum of the elegant background music and the long list of fine drinks available, you might find yourself spending a fair bit of time enjoying this “elevated” space, to say the least.
The Los Angeles version of a Miami original, Broken Shaker occupies the rooftop of the Freehand Hotel on West 8th Street, and provides what they describe as an urban, rooftop oasis, a space that brings visitors to a paradise within the middle of downtown, then allows them to enjoy the fabulous rooftop pool deck and finely-crafted drinks. You want social interaction? This is your spot, as you’ll see and be seen by many, and will have plenty of opportunities to chat it up as you mix and mingle among the hip and happening segment of the DTLA crowd.
Technically, this rooftop bar is 950 feet above the ground, but whereas the name of 71 Above might mystify you (it’s on the 71st floor, if you were curious), the luxurious atmosphere will not. You know exactly what you’re getting here: panoramic views of the whole of Los Angeles, complemented with amazing drinks served in an elegant lounge setting. Head up, then enjoy this one of a kind experience on West 5th Street.
